Letter from the Philippines #5
On the 29th Ella and I had our wedding here. It was a very nice ceremony. We attended the mass and then after the mass the Bishop performed the wedding. He did a very nice job. Here they don’t usually allow weddings unless both people are of the Catholic faith. He had to change parts of it as we went through the ceremony. After we went to a resort on the beach. About 150 of Ella’s relatives and friends attended. We all sat on the pier and talked until about 1 in the morning.
The next morning, the family, Ella, Jazie, and I went fishing and had the fish for Breakfast. We cooked everything and ate out on the pier. The morning was just beautiful.
After that everyone left and Ella and I went back to the dentist Ella had the rest on her cavities filled and I had this tooth pulled. I already knew that I have hard teeth to pull. When I had my wisdom teeth pulled I was told the roots grew right into the jaw bone. That was the same as this one. The dentist did a great job with it, but had a lot of trouble getting it out of the jaw bone. She had to actually hammer it loose. I am in a little pain today, but not as much as I had expected.
That night all of Ella’s family came to the house. Most of the men and I left and went down the street a couple of houses to Ella’s sisters. We sat and drank Philippine rum until about midnight. Ella was funny. She kept coming down and checking on me. I had to laugh. I only had a little bit but she wondered if the others might challenge me to drink more. Drinking rum, talking and eating fish is one of the things that the men do to relax here. It is one of the only things that they can afford to do as a group.
I got up about 6am today. Ella and some of the family went to town to get supplies for the next couple of days. All of the family will be here to celibate the New Year. They have all kind of parlor games planned. I am just starting to get some of the Ideas of their plans. From what I understand, all of the couple has to perform some sort of talent. Some will sing or dance or something. The children have to perform something as well. Then the adults gather and give their observations and advice to the others. It is considered to be respected and expected that they work to achieve the goals of the advice. It seems quite funny to me. This would be looked at very differently by use Americans. I could just see my sisters with this. They would be telling me where to put my advice, and giving me the direction to get there.
I am having some very good family bonding time with Ella’s family. They have said that I don’t act like other Americans that they have met. I eat what they eat. I don’t mind working if there is work to be done. I also didn’t run for the local resort to hide from them. It has not been very easy though. I look forward to being spoiled with a good old fashion hot water shower.
I will write again soon. Hope that all if well and that everyone has a safe and happy new year.
